En el desarrollo de las actividades del ser humano, siempre se generan residuos, datos estadísticos informan que en promedio en el mundo se generan 1,2 kg per cápita de residuos inútiles, en consecuencia, se hace importante la labor desarrollada por las personas que trabajan en empresas de recolección de residuos, quienes en el desarrollo de sus labores se ven expuestos a diversos factores de riesgos que pueden derivar en un accidente de trabajo o en una enfermedad de origen laboral, por ello este documento analiza la exposición a uno de estos riesgos, el biológico. En el mismo se hace revisión de las recomendaciones de prevención que han realizado algunos autores y concluye con la necesidad de estandarizar e implementar procedimientos seguros que involucren a la empresa al trabajador y a la comunidad en general.
